Artistic Statement

My life has taken many forms over the years. I've been a high school marching band and musical theater fanatic, a lover of the Cursed Poets of French literature, a restaurant owner, and a devoted husband and father to two girls. But through all these various identities and endeavors, it is music that has been the one constant, the one thread that's kept me tethered to this unpredictable world.

In my compositions, I strive to create a sonic narrative that speaks directly to the listener, drawing them into a world through emotive melodies, rich harmonies, and intricate textures, allowing for both an immersive and transportive experience. I am constantly exploring new avenues of expression. As such, I have recently started to write more extensively for the voice, exploring the emotional depths and storytelling possibilities that are unique to vocal music.

As a gay man, my personal experiences and identity are integral to my music. Themes of love, loss, and the search for identity are recurrent in my compositions, if only in the subtext or as the inspirational seed of the idea for a piece. I believe that music has the power both to illuminate and to transcend identity, that it can resonate with people from all walks of life and help secure the universal experiences that connect us all.

I am deeply committed to the creative process and believe that memorable music is often the result of an open-hearted and honest collaboration between composer and performer. I am constantly in awe of their talent and skill. Working closely with the musician can help to elicit the nuances and subtleties in my music, resulting in a performance that is more evocative and idiomatically expressive. Ultimately, I aim to create music that is engaging and accessible, appealing to performers and listeners alike.
